Project Manager - Physics Commissioning and Reactor Startup Services

This posting is suitable for individuals with a strong desire to take on the responsibility of providing technical and project management leadership in delivering on project(s) involving the startup and commissioning of reactor units. The initial focus will be on the Bruce 1 and 2 Restart Project physics support.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Provide project management, technical direction and field support on projects related to changes to the reactor core. This includes post-refurbishment activities such as initial fuel load, approach to critical, reactor physics commissioning, as well as other related commissioning activities. Provide field and project support to other activities related to reactor physics and core design such as post maintenance testing following cobalt adjuster change out and NOP detector replacement. Assist OPG and Bruce Power with trouble shooting activities related to reactivity management and core physics.

 

The initial focus on the project will be on the startup and commissioning of Bruce Units 1 and 2 following refurbishment. This project is multi-faceted. The project involves an extensive range of activities, including planning, procedure preparation, procurement of instrumentation, training, assembling and co-ordination of a team of specialists responsible for physics support during approach-to-critical and physics commissioning (Phase B and C), interfacing with the Bruce 1 and 2 restart licensing authority, operation, Bruce Power NSAS and site Fuel and Physics. Provide support to Bruce Power in interfacing with the CNSC and developing licensing strategy.

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

 

The following skills and knowledge are desirable:

  • Ability to co-ordinate and work effectively with team members, including specialists in physics support, instrumentation and clients, including site operations and training staff
  • Demonstrated experience in participating and leading technical projects in reactor startup and/or physics commissioning to successful conclusions
  • Good understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation
  • Superior knowledge of reactor core behavior during reactor startup, including knowledge of instrumentation
  • Superior knowledge in site processes and procedures, in particular, approach to critical and physics commissioning procedures
  • Good understanding of regulatory requirements on CANDU power plant commissioning and low power operation
  • Well developed verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare commissioning and operating procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare training materials
  • Demonstrated ability in written communication to effectively organize and clearly present material
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering results on time and budget, to required quality
  • Familiarity with relevant NSS business systems (e.g. RAPID, AGRESSO)
  • Ability to develop and monitor complex schedules involving many tasks and resources
  • Ability to identify, monitor and mitigate project risks
  • Good understanding of NSS Quality Assurance requirements

     

    The knowledge and skills are considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of an advanced university degree in an appropriate field (or equivalent) and a period of typically 10 years or more of relevant experience.

     

    The successful candidate is expected to bring a high level of energy to the project and have an established reputation for being able to work well with clients.
